'Virtual Insanity'라는 곡으로 우리나라 대중들에게 많이 알려진 오늘의 가수는 90년대 애시드 재즈의 판도를 흔들었던 밴드 '자미로콰이'(Jamiroquai)이다. 기발한 영상 미학을 보여준 그들의 뮤직 비디오 때문에 더욱 유명하지만, 의외로 밴드라는 사실을 잘 모르시는 분들도 있다. (현재 남아있는 멤버와 나간 멤버만 합쳐도 20명이 넘는다) 보컬이자 팀의 리더인 '제이 케이'(Jay Kay)가 뮤비에서 혼자 활약을 펼치는 것이 그 이유인듯.

'인코그니토'(Incognito), '브랜드 뉴 헤비스'(Brand New Heavies)와 함께 영국을 대표하는 애시드 재즈 밴드이지만 뮤직 비디오나 다른 음악적 장르를 시도 한 부분은 두 그룹에 비해 탁월했다. 흑인 음악에 영향을 받아 평크와 재즈, 디스코 사운드를 기반으로 했으며, 락과 일렉트로닉 장으로 사용해서 변화와 신선함을 추구한 팀이다.

초창기는 영국과 서유럽 등지에서 주목받기 시작했고, 1996년에 발표한 그들의 세 번째 앨범 [Traveling Without Moving]으로 엄청난 인기를 얻었다. 특히 1997년 MTV 뮤직 어워드에서 4개의 영상 부문을 휩쓸었던 'Virtual Insanity'는 혁신적이었고, 앨범 [Traveling Without Moving]은 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 펑크 앨범으로 기네스 세계 기록을 받았다. 

'Canned Heat'는 자미로콰이의 네 번째 앨범 [Synkronized]에 수록된 두 번째 싱글이다. 중력을 거스르는것 같은 'Virtual Insanity' 뮤직 비디오처럼 재미있고 신선하게 제작된 영상이 인상적이다. '제이 케이'는 집안에 벽을 마음대로 통과하고 TV속을 자유자재로 이동하며 신나게 춤을 춘다. 정해진 안무가 아니라서 기술적인 멋은 없지만 그의 춤은 항상 자유로유면서 절도가 있다.

2004년에 개봉한 미국의 독립 영화이자 코미디 영화인 '나폴레옹 다이너마이트'(napoleon dynamite)에서 '나폴레옹'이 무대에서 춤추는 장면에 '자미로콰이'의 'Canned Heat'가 나온다. 영화에서 가장 돈이 많이 들어간 부분이 이 음악일거란 이야기도 있을 정도. 이해한다.

큰 줄기와 맥락이 없는 이야기 전개를 보여주는 코미디이며 소위 찐따들이 나오는 루저 캐릭터물이라 할 수 있다.

주인공인 '나폴레옹'(존 헤더)은 시종일관 입을 벌리고 다니며, 연기랄 것도 없이 표정도 한 가지인데다가, 멀대같이 큰 키에 또래보다 낮은 정신연령을 지닌 전형적인 왕따 캐릭터이다.
어느 날 그는 중고 상품을 파는 마트에서 삼지창을 하나 득템하고, 또 뭐가 있나 살피던 중 댄스 강의 비디오를 하나 얻는다. 집에서 비디오를 보며 열심히 춤을 연마한 '나폴레옹'은 친구인 '페드로'가 학생 회장에 출마한 당일 날 공연을 해야한다는 갑작스런 요구에 갈고 닦은 연습의 성과를 보여준다. 

'Canned Heat'가 흐르고 리듬을 타는 '나폴레옹'. 어이없는 춤으로 강당에 모인 수많은 학생들에게 망신을 당할거라는 예상과는 달리, 그리고 웃을 준비를 한 필자의 기대와 달리... 웃기긴한데 생각보다 느낌있게 잘 춘다...

이것도 극의 반전이라면 반전이다.

오랜만에 'Canned Heat'를 들으며 흥겨움에 빠지고 싶은 사람이라면 '나폴레옹 다이너마이트'를 보는 것도 괜찮을듯 하다. 캐릭터를 보며 실컷 웃다가 음악으로 흥겨울 영화가 생각처럼 많지 않다. 독특한 바보들을 보는 즐거움과 예전 MTV의 추억이 함께하는 시간이 될 것이다.
